Digitising Scenic Art for Elton John’s Farewell Tour

The Challenge

In late 2018 Beings Digital was asked to capture and digitise the scenic art that had been created for the stage. The arch was made up of 25 panels each depicting eras from the artist’s career, from the release of his fourth album ‘Madman Across the Water’ to his many musical theatre contributions and the launch of the ‘Elton John AIDS Foundation.’

The Solution

Using 3D Laser Scanning and Structured Light Scanning equipment Beings Digital spent a day scanning each of the 25 panels that makes up the 25m x 10m arch.

Our goal was to produce CGI models for the creative studio in London to use as part of the screen content.

The Processing

Using a variety of post-production tools we cleaned up the raw data. Some snippets of the process are shown in the video below.

The Results

We delivered OBJ files with texture maps (8k) – the client had requested both high-poly and low-poly models. Take a look at one of the models below:
